INS Tarangini Arrives At Port Said In Egypt For Lokayan 22

The Indian Navy's first sail training ship, the INS Tarangini arrived at Port Said in Egypt as part of its Lokayan 2022, a 14-nation ship's voyage. On arrival, the ship was greeted by officials from the Indian Embassy and the Egyptian Navy.

The ship in Egypt will participate in various social and professional interactions during the port call. Since 2022 is the 75th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties between Egypt and India, it bears special significance. However, the ship will also remain accessible to guests.

On 6 April of this year, the INS Tarangini departed from the Naval Jetty at the Southern Naval Command in Kochi for the 14-nation Lokayan 2022 tour after Rear Admiral Antony George, Chief of Staff for Southern Naval Command, flagged off the journey. 

The ship will make 17 port calls throughout her seven-month journey, covering a distance of 17,485 nautical miles. Later this year in November, the ship will return to Kochi.

The major purpose of the trip is to participate in the prestigious Tall Ship Race events in Harlingen, Antwerp and Aalborg as well as train under trainee officers who are part of the first Training Squadron.

The Tarangini's journey is in honour of the 75th anniversary of the country's independence, as part of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav.

A three-masted barque called INS Tarangini was inducted into service in 1997 to serve as a sail training vessel for the Indian Navy. The British naval architect Colin Mudie designed the ship, which was built in Goa and launched on 1 December 1995.
