India's Fifth P-75 Scorpene Class Submarines ‘VAGIR’ Begins Sea Trails Amid Incessant Delays

The fifth submarine of Project 75, Yard 11879, Indian Navy’s Kalvari class commenced her sea trials on 01 Feb. The submarine is scheduled for delivery to the Indian Navy in the year 2022 after completion of these trials. While the Project 75 is near completion, It has been marked with incessant delays and subsequent late delivery to the Indian Navy. Also, the Socorpene submarines are yet not fitted with Air-Independent Propulsion (AIP) system, which was planned earlier. The AIP system was supposed to add desired capability to the conventional diesel-electric submarines underwater. DRDO is making on the AIP system and it is estimated to take another 2-3 years from the technology-demonstrator to the proven operational capability.

Defence Budget 2022 Puts Spotlight On R&D in Defence; Reserves 68% of Capital Budget For Domestic Industry

In the Union Budget 2022-23 on Tuesday, a total of Rs 5.25 lakh crores has been allocated to the Defence Ministry and the Services this year. Overall, the budgetary allocation is creased by Rs 47,000 crores from last year's allocation of Rs 4.78 lakh crores which is around 10% compared to the last year. While the announcement to reserve 68% of the capital procurement budget for domestic industry, the finer aspect of the budget is the focus on R&D.
