India Seeks Waivers From US On CAATSA

India will most likely be exempted from Countering America’s Adversaries Through Sanctions Act (CAATSA). This development has come after Defense minister; Nirmala Sitharaman told the US Defense minister that CAATSA is a US law and not a UN law.

US Defense Secretary Jim Mattis has sought waivers from sanctions on some countries making a transition from their military dependence on Russia, claiming that it will help other countries strengthen ties with the US. 

Last week several US lawmakers claimed to be working on providing CAATSA waivers for India since it is important for the country’s strategic relations. 


“India and Russia have always had close ties for defence supplies. Discussions regarding S400 have been going on for a long time and the USA has been conscious of this sensitivity and it would be sensible to make this important exception,” Air Marshal Anil Chopra retired), a defence analyst, told Sputnik.
