The standing committee of the Nationwide Board for Wildlife (NBWL) approved the new India Air Force (IAF) base in Ladakh, near Indian and Chinese troops clashed in June 2020.
The new base was approved at a high-level assembly meeting last month, according to the reports.
Additionally, the NBWL cleared eight defence initiatives within the Changthang and Karakoram wildlife sanctuaries as India takes steps to ramp up its defence infrastructure close to the LAC to match similar initiatives taken by China to improve its army infrastructure within the space.
After the approval, the Ministry of Defence will require environmental clearances, under the Forest Conservation Act (1980) and Atmosphere Safety Act (1986), because the area falls underneath Ladakh’s protected chilly desert.
Upgradation of three roads near the strategic area has additionally cleared 28 hectare for the double-laning of the Khalsar-Agham street, 7 hectare for upgradation of the Leh-Chalunka street and one other 107 hectare for the development of T-Salu Changchemo street in Ladakh.
