IAF Inducts LCH, Big Boost In Combat Capabilities At Higher Altitudes

On Monday, the Indian Air Force (IAF) officially inducted the first fleet of indigenous Light Combat Helicopters (LCHs) developed by state-owned Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL).
The 5.8-tonne twin-engine gunship chopper is outfitted with air-to-air missiles, 20 mm turret cannons, rocket systems and other armaments. It is designed especially for mountain combat after the IAF felt the need for it during the Kargil war in 1999.
Four helicopters from the fleet were inducted into the IAF during a ceremony held at the Jodhpur Air Force Station at the presence of top military officers, including Chief of Air Staff Air Chief Marshal VR Chaudhari and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh.
Singh said it is a significant occasion that showcases India's capacity for defence manufacturing. Earlier, he tweeted that the induction of these helicopters will be a big boost to the IAF’s combat prowess.
According to military officials, the LCH would be able to hit out at enemy infantry, tanks, bunkers, drones and other assets in high-altitude areas.
According to government officials, the IAF and HAL further began researching the prospect of creating more able platforms with a capacity to carry heavy weapon loads, sufficient fuel and more ability to operate in the higher altitudes of the Himalayan ranges.
