Army chopper crashes in Kashmir, co-pilot killed

An Indian Army Cheetah helicopter crashed in the Gurez area of Bandipora in Kashmir on March 11, killing the co-pilot and grievously injuring the pilot.

The deceased co-pilot has been identified as Major Sankalp Yadav.

The helicopter was on a mission to evacuate an ailing soldier from a forward post at Gujran, Baraub. It crashed in Baraub before it could get to the soldier. The wreckage was located in the snowbound Gujran Nallah.

The pilot and co-pilot were evacuated to the Base Hospital at Srinagar, where Major Yadav succumbed to his injuries.

“Major Sankalp Yadav, the co-pilot, succumbed to his injuries at 92 Base Hospital. The injured pilot was further evacuated to Command Hospital, Udhampur. He is critical, but stable,” an Army statement disclosed. A court of inquiry has been ordered.

Major Yadav, 29, was commissioned into the Indian Army in 2015. He belonged to Jaipur, Rajasthan. He is survived by his father.
